Cash Credit Limit Available but Drawing Power Is Lower? Check These Items

A sanctioned cash-credit limit and the amount currently available to draw can be different. The answer often lies in the lender's drawing-power calculation rather than the headline limit.

Reconcile the calculation to the sanction

Drawing power commonly depends on eligible stock and receivables after specified margins and deductions. The precise formula, ageing cut-offs and reporting requirements are lender- and sanction-specific; there is no single percentage that should be copied into every business's statement.

Obtain the lender's calculation and compare it with your records. Look for overdue receivables, unpaid stock, obsolete inventory, already financed invoices and missing statements.

A hypothetical illustration

Assume a facility has a ₹50 lakh limit but its approved calculation produces ₹38 lakh of drawing power. If ₹35 lakh is already drawn, the apparent ₹15 lakh headroom against the limit may translate into only ₹3 lakh against drawing power, before any other restrictions.

This is an arithmetic illustration, not a standard banking formula. Use the actual sanction terms for your account.

Fix the cause, not just the statement

If the gap comes from slow collections, a higher reported sales figure will not solve it. If inventory is obsolete, reclassifying it without a genuine basis creates a worse problem. Submit accurate statements and explain operational changes.

For seasonal growth, discuss whether a reviewed limit or a suitable temporary arrangement is appropriate. RBI's MSME direction recognises working-capital review mechanisms, but it does not make an enhancement automatic.

Next step: prepare one reconciliation from ledger balances to eligible assets to drawing power to available balance. That single page can make the lender meeting far more productive than arguing from the sanctioned amount alone.
