Business Loan KFS and APR: Read This Before Comparing Interest Rates

Two term loans quoting the same interest rate can leave the borrower with different costs. The Key Facts Statement, where applicable, is the place to begin a like-for-like comparison.

What to look for

RBI's commercial-bank conduct direction requires a KFS for retail and MSME term loans, subject to its scope and exclusions. It includes APR, bringing interest and relevant charges into a more useful cost measure. Do not assume every revolving facility has identical KFS treatment.

Check the amount disbursed, instalments, tenure, charges and repayment schedule. Ask for an explanation of any amount deducted before funds reach your account.

Compare equal borrowing assumptions

A lower EMI may come from a longer tenure rather than a cheaper loan. Compare offers using the same amount and duration, then separately decide whether the longer repayment period is appropriate.

For example, if two offers provide different net cash after upfront deductions, the borrower is not receiving the same usable funding even when the sanction amount matches. Record both sanctioned and net-disbursed amounts.

Questions worth asking

  • Which costs are included in the APR and which contingent charges remain separate?
  • Is the rate fixed or floating, and how can it reset?
  • What happens on delayed payment or early closure?
  • Are optional services genuinely optional and separately priced?

Do not sign a document containing blanks or rely on a verbal assurance that a charge will later be waived. Keep the final KFS and agreement together so future account entries can be checked against them.

Practical decision: choose after understanding the rupee cash flows, not simply the lowest advertised rate. The KFS helps organise that comparison; repayment capacity still determines whether the borrowing is sensible.
