Financing CAPEX in 2026–27: Build the Plan Around Your Business, Not a Boom Narrative
A decision to expand should rest on demand, execution capability and financeable cash flows. National investment statistics provide context, but they cannot establish whether a particular company should build another line or factory.

Read the survey carefully
MoSPI’s March 2026 release reports provisional private corporate CAPEX of ₹11,43,879 crore for FY 2025–26 and intentions of ₹9,55,281 crore for FY 2026–27. These are different reporting stages; intentions are not completed expenditure or a universal expansion signal.
Use industry demand and your own utilisation, order book and margins to test the commercial case. Separate firm orders from customer enquiries.
Divide expenditure into decisions
Identify essential replacement, productivity improvements and new capacity. Each has a different benefit and execution risk. A replacement machine may protect current output, while a new product line depends on customer adoption.
Compare a single large build with phases that have independent operating value. Phasing can reduce initial exposure, but duplicated mobilisation or infrastructure may increase total cost.
Match funding to the cash cycle
Use a monthly model covering construction, commissioning and stabilisation. Include delayed receipts, cost overruns and the working capital needed at higher sales. Do not allocate all internal cash to machinery and then discover that raw materials cannot be funded.
For covered bank project finance, RBI’s current credit directions include appraisal and disbursement requirements. A lender’s sanction is conditional; it is not the same as immediately available cash.
Test the downside before negotiating
Run slower utilisation, lower margin and delayed commissioning cases. Identify the additional equity or contingency funding required in each. If the expansion threatens the existing business under a plausible downside, reduce or postpone the commitment.
Agree a funding plan, milestone budget and monitoring responsibility before placing irreversible orders. The useful question for 2026–27 is not whether others are investing, but whether your project can create and retain enough cash to justify its cost and financing obligations.
