Bank Wrote Off Your Loan: Why That May Not Be a Waiver
A borrower may hear that a loan has been “written off” and conclude that repayment is no longer required. The phrase can describe an accounting action that leaves the underlying claim intact.

Three different outcomes
A technical write-off removes an NPA from the lender’s accounting presentation, wholly or partly, without waiving the borrower claim. A compromise settlement is a negotiated resolution with specified payment and concession terms. A waiver requires an actual legal basis for giving up the relevant claim.
RBI’s 2023 originating framework made this distinction; the current commercial-bank stressed-asset directions preserve the borrower’s legal obligation after a technical write-off. Different lender categories require their own applicable directions.
Ask for account-level evidence
Request a statement of outstanding dues and the written basis of any claimed discharge. Read the settlement sanction, payment receipts and closure or release documents together. A financial statement reporting aggregate bank write-offs does not identify the status of an individual borrower’s liability.
An illustrative ₹10 crore account technically written off may still be pursued for recovery. If the bank later agrees to accept ₹6 crore under an OTS, the concession depends on the approved terms and performance. These numbers are examples, not a standard discount.
Credit reporting is a separate question
Do not assume a write-off or settlement automatically removes adverse credit history. Obtain the relevant credit report, compare it with the account records and use the formal correction process for inaccuracies. A truthful but unfavourable entry is different from an incorrect entry.
What to clarify in a resolution
- Exact settlement amount and due dates.
- Consequences of missing an instalment.
- Treatment of guarantors and collateral.
- Whether any future recoveries remain payable.
- Documents to be issued after full performance.
If a debt has been transferred to another institution, identify the current creditor and its authority before making a payment or seeking a release.
The useful next step is reconciliation, not reliance on a label. A clear statement of who is owed what, backed by the operative documents, is the foundation for any restructuring or settlement discussion.
