A ₹100 Crore Project: How Much Promoter Contribution Is Really Needed?

There is no single promoter-contribution percentage that answers every ₹100 crore project proposal. The requirement depends on eligible project cost, lender policy, the financing product, existing leverage and the project’s cash capacity.

Define the ₹100 crore first

Establish whether the figure includes interest during construction, contingencies, taxes and initial working capital. Identify costs the lender will not finance. A contribution calculated only on eligible cost can leave other expenditure unfunded.

Check how land already owned, expenditure already incurred and related-party assets will be valued and recognised. Do not assume book value automatically counts as fresh promoter cash.

Distinguish arithmetic from approval

If an illustrative project uses ₹70 crore debt and ₹30 crore recognised equity, its project debt-equity ratio is approximately 2.33:1. That calculation says nothing by itself about whether ₹70 crore is serviceable or sanctionable.

If downside cash flows support only ₹60 crore debt, the remaining ₹40 crore must come from acceptable sources or the project scope must change. Calling a repayable promoter loan equity does not necessarily make it eligible under the sanction.

Read product-specific conditions

SBI’s Surya Shakti product page publishes financial conditions for its solar-finance product. Those conditions should not be transplanted into an unrelated factory or property transaction. Ask the proposed lender for the precise applicable margin, ratio definitions and contribution requirements in writing.

Match contribution with timing

Covered bank project finance is subject to RBI’s current disbursement framework. Map when equity and other agreed sources must be infused against construction milestones and lender conditions.

A credible total contribution is insufficient if it arrives after payments fall due. Verify that promised funds are available, lawful and consistent with other obligations.

Maintain a separate plan for overruns and delayed operations. The useful answer is a dated sources-and-uses schedule showing both the recognised contribution and the additional liquidity needed to complete and stabilise the project—not a headline percentage borrowed from another transaction.
